Budai

Description

A colleague at work asked if I would want to paint a laughing Buddha on her wall (turn out it's not Buddha but Budai apparently, didn't know that before).
Anyway, I said I would first try out on paper if I could draw a Budai.
Heavily referenced on a printed out reference photo she gave me, but I've got no idea where to find it online so I can't properly credit :S

Does anybody know what's supposed to be inside of the bowl he holds in his hands? I figured it might be rice, as he symbolises how a man can be happy with little possesions (the bag which contain his possesions, prayerbeads around his neck.. food in his bowl?)

I think it came out ok. Noticed he's a bit crooked and one of his ears looks asif it's about to fall off *shrugs*
Anyway, after sketching and drawing him I wanted to do him in colour, so I put the drawing on Aquarelpaper and started colouring it.
Hope my colleague approves of this design. Should it ever get painted on the wall I'll be sure to post pictures!

That is beautiful.

I don't know what's supposed to be in the bowl. But, I know the smile and the "fat" physique is a symbol of satisfaction and contentment. A lot of the symbolism in these images relate to contentment so I think you're on the right track.
